Asli Sungu, Frappant, 2005, Site specific installation, Acrylic wall paint, Dimensions variable. Courtesy the artist.
Asli Sungu’s practice spans from her intimate videos to her recent large scale paint installations. Sungu is of Turkish origin and she has been based in Berlin for over ten years. Her work focuses on private stories, which are often humourous or idiosyncratic but the resonance is something we can all identify with. Whether she is looking at her family rituals or chopping a carrot she explores daily themes that highlight much larger power structures and meanings.
Sungu was born in Istanbul and lives and works in Berlin. Sungu has exhibited at Musée Departmental d’Arts et Traditions Popularizes, Champlitte, Frankreich, Platform Garanti Contemporary art Centre, Istanbul, Galerie 21:26, Oslo, Norway and in 2005 she was awarded a Goethe Institute residency in Beirut.
See the Dialogue page for more information about Asli’s forthcoming residency with the Delfina Foundation in February 2010.
