Kiran Kaur Brar questions the structure of language that determines notions of identity and challenges the idea of a fixed political and cultural position. Although the strategies she employs vary in each work, by combining playfulness with violence and vulnerability, and juxtaposing cultural and emotional elements, her work attempts to create hybrid encounters and presents the viewer with unresolved moments of unrest and interrupted narratives. Kaur Brar created a new video Barber as part of her Istanbul residency supported by the British Council.
Kiran Kaur Brar is of Indian origin and was born in London where she lives and works. She is a recent graduate of Central Saint Martins College. She has exhibited in London at Watermans Gallery and Bloomberg New Contemporaries in 2006 and was part of the show Indrude Art&Life, Zendai MOMA in Shanghai in 2008.
