Nasan Tur, Speaker-Backpack, 2006, From the “Backpacks” series, Mixed media, Dimensions variable. Courtesy the artist.
Nasan Tur’s recent work has focused on the experience of displacement and moving, with a strong performative element, conducted by the artist during exhibitions. His installations and videos often implicate the viewer. His work also includes an exploration of Islamic traditions, for example in his video installation Ritual, where a devout Muslim from Berlin conducts his ritual washing to prepare for the five daily prayers. Presented as a never-ending loop of purification in a semi-circle of five projections, Tur respectfully exposes the physical repetition necessary to commit to the faith.
Tur was born in Germany and has Turkish origins. He was part of the 2008 Taipei Biennial, 2008 SCAPE Biennial, Christchurch, New Zealand and the 2007 Istanbul Biennial. Currently he has a solo show at Kunstmuseum Stuttgart, Germany.
